ATTENTION ALL SCUBA DIVERS!?
I am just starting diving and I need a knife. What is a good knife to use and how big should one be?
I don’t particularly need to be a badass with a 10″ knife. So.. how big is a good one, and do you have any recommendations?
It’s not a weapon for starters so bigger isn’t better. It’s a tool. You use it to pry, hammer and cut. Yes, I said hammer. Most good knives will have an area to use as a hammer head on the end of the hilt.
You honestly don’t need anything longer than 6 inches that has that hammer end, is double edged, has serrated teeth on at least one side and slicing blade on the other. A built in line cutter is a bonus.
Look for stainless 304 or better. It’s fairly good at corrosion resistance. I personally prefer a flat tip blade. Safer since you probably don’t plan on stabbing your buddy and it won’t break off like a pointed tip can when using it to pry.
The sheath it comes with is important too. It needs to fit wherever you intend to place it. A 6 inch can go on leg or on many BC’s. That sheath has to allow you to get the knife out easily with gloves on but not so easy as to let the knife go by accident. Speaking of which, you’ll really want two knives. Always good to have a back up since it would really suck getting caught up in monofilament, drop your primary and now have nothing to finish getting yourself unstuck.
I wear my 6 inch on the inside of my left thigh ( I’m right handed and I wreck dive) Wearing it on the outside of the thigh just gets it caught on things as I squirm through tight spots. I can still easily get at it. I also have a smaller BC knife attached on my shoulder harness that can be gotten to in any position. Two knives is a bonus and the BC knives can be quite inexpensive.
